According to Symantec's 2008 State of the Data Center Report, firms are utilising 50 per cent of the storage capacity of their data centres on average, while 47 per cent of server capacity goes unused.
Virtualisation was one of the major initiatives being undertaken by firms to improve their data centres, with 77 per cent employing server solutions and 76 per cent storage solutions.
Approximately 80 per cent of firms undertook server consolidation initiatives, while 71 per cent looked at storage resource management and continuous data protection.
Increasing the utilisation of data centre servers and storage appeared to be a priority for many of the companies.
Last month, Symantec announced that it had developed disaster recovery and high availability solutions for use with VMware infrastructure.
