Security 'could be compromised if firms cut back on IT training'

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been warned not to cutback on the amount they spend on IT training during the recession. According to independent research organisation the National Computing Centre (NCC), it is important to invest in IT solutions, such as a firewall or anti-virus software, but equally important to ensure that they are maintained properly.

Michael Dean, head of marketing at the NCC, said maintenance was "key" and that well-trained staff were crucial to getting a return on investment.

"If security processes are relaxed, the threat of computer failure will be much higher," he commented.

Enterprise Resource Planning and Ardent Solutions recently published a report which indicated that 23 per cent of SMEs think that budget limitations placed on their IT departments could have a negative impact on their competitive advantage.

More than four out of ten suggested that insufficient budgets could lead to a decline in the reliability of systems or an increase in downtime.
