Online crime 'is an issue of public concern'

Businesses that rely heavily on IT for their day-to-day operations may need to think about upgrading their security systems after news that cyber crime is on the increase.According to IT solutions provider Unisys, following the onset of the economic crisis, opportunistic criminals have come out of the woodwork in a bid to take advantage of resulting weaknesses.

As such, the organisation's vice president of global security solutions Neil Fisher claimed that it has now become an issue of public concern.

"We have seen a significant spike in the perception of proliferating online crime as a result of the financial crisis ... Everyone is at risk," he commented.

Indeed, a recent report conducted by web security solutions provider Finjan revealed that one of its own research centres discovered a network of almost two million computers which had been infected by malware.

Among those affected were government agencies as well as a string of corporate companies and privately-owned computers.
