IT savvy businesses 'should step up online security'

As more and more businesses turn to web-based applications, they have been advised to simultaneously step up their network security.Online security organisation Websense has claimed that more attention needs to be paid to preventing security breaches and preparing for things like disaster recovery.

It stated that behavioural solutions alone are not enough and that technology needs to be called into action to prevent the worst from happening.

"New powerful security products are widely available which analyse web traffic in real-time, instantly categorise new sites and dynamic content, proactively discover security risks, and block dangerous malware," commented Mark Murtagh, the firm's technical director.

Indeed, a recent poll carried out by Run an Online Business Site revealed just how damaging an online security breach can be to a business.

Around 60 per cent of those surveyed admitted that their operations would grind to a halt if their IT systems failed.

Moreover, over a third claimed that their systems have previously been infected with a computer virus.
