'Explore other security options' before breaking hard drives

Individuals and businesses have been told that they should look at the other data security options available before following the advice of Which? Computing and smashing hard drives after use.Robert Winter, Kroll Ontrack UK's chief engineer of data recovery, stated that while Which?'s solution would likely be effective, people should probably consider alternative methods of protecting their information, assessing the risks to decide which approach to take.

"There are plenty of software erasure utilities on the market and some computers come with software that lets you erase your hard drive yourself," he commented.

KPMG's Data Loss Baramoter found that 2008 was the worst year on record for data loss, with 38 per cent more people affected during the three months up to November than the year before.

It predicted that this upwards trend would continue in 2009, with as many as 190 million people feeling the impact of data losses around the world.ADNFCR-1984-ID-18970690-ADNFCR
