UK online advertising spend increases in 2008

Despite a decline in overall advertising spend last year, the amount spent on internet ads rose during 2008, recent figures have revealed.Companies in the UK spent £3.6 billion on advertising on the internet, the equivalent to 19.3 per cent of the overall ad spend, according to the Advertising Association.

It was the third largest advertising medium used by businesses in 2008, behind television and the press, which accounted for 24 per cent and 36.6 per cent of total ad spend respectively.

However, the only other medium to record growth last year was cinema advertising, although this was only by one per cent.

The £3.6 billion spent on online advertising during 2008 represented a rise of nearly one-fifth (19.1 per cent) compared to the figures recorded in 2007.

This comes after social networking site Facebook revealed that spending on online advertisements on the site tripled over the last 12 months.
