Kevin Gibbons states for Econsultancy that businesses stand to have a lot to gain by catering to as wide a target audience as possible, while it is also a legal duty to make websites accessible to individuals with disabilities.
Mr Gibbons remarks that it is not too late to make some adjustments to a website that is already in full flow to ensure that those with disabilities may be attracted to make some online shopping transactions.
He said: "The point is that a sizeable minority of the population have additional requirements when browsing your site. So, if your pages comply with best practice, you're going to add to your potential client base.
"Not only that, if your competitors are failing to make their websites accessible, you could be winning their clients."
Meanwhile, the Employers' Forum in Disability has revealed that slightly more than ten per cent of the UK population have some form of disability and this community has the power to spend £80 billion each year.
According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, websites that allow individuals to purchase goods or services are the most popular online destinations.
