Businesses are being advised to make full use of social media networking after a marketing expert said that websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, play a "vital role" in online advertising. Of the 137 brand marketers and agency professionals asked in a survey by Pivot, a marketing company, 87 per cent said they plan to increase their social media spending over the coming year. And this method is successful, according to Gordon Borrell, chief executive officer of Borrell Associates, because social media "puts a magnifying glass on the most powerful sales driver of all: word-of-mouth". He said: "The biggest opportunity of all, I believe, is the disintermediation of the small gaggle of people, who could make or break a business by talking to others." However, companies will still need an easy-to-remember domain name and a dynamic website to attract new customers as online spending increases. Figures released this month show that China's ecommerce sales increased by 60 per cent in the first half of 2010 compared to the same time last year...
