Open-source managed hosting 'is becoming more popular'

Increasing numbers of firms are opting to utilise open-source managed hosting solutions, a recent study has revealed. IT industry analyst IDC surveyed IT experts from 515 western European companies and found that nearly one in ten use an open-source back-office application.

Some seven per cent revealed that they make use of an open-source customer relationship management application.

Bo Lykkegaard, research director of European enterprise applications and services at the group, commented: "We see vendors of open source enterprise applications attracting equity investments and heavyweight leaders and growth rates are typically above 20 per cent per year, sometimes much higher."

The survey revealed that one of the reasons why open-source managed hosting solutions are being taken up is that they do not require an upfront license payment and are cheaper to maintain.

This comes after a study by business and IT analyst Quocirca concluded that managed hosting solutions provide companies with a way to control their costs.
