While businesses, as well as public sector organisations, have steadily become more reliant on the internet to operate, an investigation carried out by the House of Lords found that security measures are still insufficient.
In particular, the report, which has been published by the House of Lords European Union Committee, has pointed to national discrepancies across the continent.
It noted that gaps between the best-defended nations and those with relatively weak precautions in place are potentially leaving firms, financial institutions and even government departments vulnerable to attack.
The committee's chair Lord Jopling explained to the Guardian: "The threat can come anywhere including to individual businesses, financial services such as the City, critical infrastructure or the mechanics of government."
Just last month, Luis Corrons, technical director for Panda Security, warned that smaller businesses in particular are being placed at risk as computer criminals become increasingly sophisticated in their hacking techniques.
