Emails 'could be replaced by social networking'

Internal emails could be replaced by social networking services among many firms by 2014.This is the prediction of Gartner, which said that 20 per cent of business organisations could adopt the trend.

Vice-president of the firm Matt Cain explained that there could be an erosion of the distinction between email and social networks.

Websites such as microblogs and other activity streams will be used by 50 per cent of businesses by 2012, the report continued.

Managing director of digital media agency Nixon McInnes Will McInnes said many organisations are "playing around" with social media for geographic audiences.

"I think the external environment has changed so much that people are thinking that if staff don’t read their newsletter, but do like reading Facebook, then perhaps there's a better way to communicate," he predicted.

Small to medium sized enterprises have a larger incentive to adopt such technologies than larger businesses, Mr McInnes added.
