Worldwide server factory revenue up 11%, says IDC
The worldwide server market experienced an 11 per cent increase in revenue in the second quarter of 2010, compared to the same three-month period last year, with this rise in demand for storage space likely to prompt increasing interest in hosted storage. The International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that income increased to $10.9 billion in the last quarter, which saw the highest quarterly revenue growth since 2003. Jean S Bozman, research vice president of enterprise servers at IDC, said though spending was "hard-hit" last year, he thinks the demand for midrange servers will increase. He said: "IDC expects this decline to moderate in the second half of 2010, with shipments of new midrange enterprise server products in the Unix server market, and continued demand for more scalable x86 servers in the midrange segment (servers priced from $25,000 to $250,000)." Businesses can save money and become more efficient by moving data from their on-site infrastructure to a hosted server. Last month, IDC said that server hardware revenue for cloud computing would increase from $582 million in 2009 to $718 million in 2014. ..
