Firms 'are filing trademarks for top-level domain names'

A large number of companies are attempting to trademark new domain names ahead of the changes to the availability of certain extensions, it has been reported. According to DomainNameWire.com, applications for top-level domain names are not yet being accepted, despite numerous attempts by firms to claim certain names.

It noted that Top Level Domain Holdings (TDLH) has already applied for trademarks for the .movie, .kids, .books and .buy extensions among others.

Despite many applications for names, few companies have been successful at this stage.

Antony Van Couvering, chief operating officer of TDLH, commented: "We don't actually believe that they are necessary or even helpful, but we want to avoid having to deal with someone else's trademark-based claim."

This comes after Rob McConnell, SQS NI's regional director, said in an article for the Belfast Telegraph that the new generic top-level domains will give companies greater flexibility when building their brands.
