Domain name sex.com going up for auction

Internet entrepreneurs may be contemplating a bid on one of the most valuable domain names in the coming days as sex.com is about to be made available at auction. It is reported that Escom LLC paid $14 million for the name in 2006, but since has defaulted on payments to DOM Partners LLC, which helped to finance this deal.

Bidding is due to start at a much-reduced $1 million on March 18th and is proof that businesses could make substantial profits if they take the time to purchase the best domain name.

The sale is being run at Maltz Auctions, with auctioneer Richard Maltz stating that a number of parties have come forward to show an interest.

According to Reuters, he explained: "We don't know who's serious and who's not, but prospective bidders need a $1 million certified check. It should be interesting."

Sex.com was first registered as a domain name in 1994 by Gary Kremen, the founder of Match.com.

Meanwhile, internet.com has changed hands for $18 million in the past, with $16 million being spent to acquire insure.com.
